As an academic with a strong foundation in philosophy and the hard sciences, a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army, and an Emergency Medicine (EM) physician... Jim has participated in some of the most dynamic events of the last 30+ years. His perspective is shaped by both intense EM environments as well as combat in some of the most elite Special Operations units in the US. As an airborne ranger and physician, Jim parachuted into Afghanistan in 2001 and continued deployments annually for almost a decade. As the senior US military physician in Liberia during the Ebola response, Jim experienced the challenge of building consensus among many disparate organizations and cultures. As Soldier, officer, commander, physician, philosopher, and patient with PTSD, Jim has reflected on and developed broad perspectives on leadership, training, communication, humility, life, death and purpose.
